Students learn best when their basic needs are taken care of. When at school, my students have a roof over their heads, access to water, and have basic comforts. However, our school day is long and our lunch is early--at 11:20am. They work best in the afternoon when they're able to get some extra food in their stomachs.
Being able to supply them with a snack after their recess will allow them to pay attention to their learning instead of how hungry they are.
I chose a variety of snacks so that students could have a choice in what they would like to eat in the afternoon. Some students attend after-school programs and do not get a chance to eat dinner until late at night, so a snack would help them get through that time.
