In my math class we use journals for daily curriculum instruction. We always seem to be crunched for time so a timer that all students can see would be great addition to our classroom along with a jumbo number line viewable by all. Our precious time is spent taking notes and working on mathematical applications. Our notes are written with mechanical pencils using manipulatives such as foldables and assignments and are cut with scissors and glued in student journals for use as study guides for future checks for understanding. Our students know that their journals are study guides, and they take pride in their work and what they place in it. Magnetic folder bins and pockets are a great help in keeping all our handouts organized and easily accessible to students. Extra papers can be kept and made accessible via space-saving paper centers. As students get back into the schedule of face-to-face blending learning we must keep in mind that safety is always important. As we share the use of some of our journaling supplies, glue and scissors, we are reminded to sanitize with Purell hand sanitizer and spray our scissors with Microban sanitizing spray overnight. Together we can get our students Back to Basics with Math Journaling!
