A 2012 study from the University of Minnesota found that students participated 48 percent more in discussions in a classroom with collaborative group seating versus traditional lecture-style seating, and also improved their performance on standardized tests. It also requires introducing higher-order thinking skills, like problem-solving, and emotional skills, like conflict resolution. Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD.
Flexible seating helps make learning fun. With the lowered table and floor cushions, students will be able to sit on the floor comfortably if they so choose. I also would like to have a standing table for students to use to stand while doing their work. I want my students to be able to choose what works for them so they are able to create and accomplish their best work.
