A garden provides a multitude of sensory input while also providing fresh produce to taste and share. Even the littlest students are curious about living things and the outdoors. A garden with interesting colors, textures, sound and food would encourage my students' exploration of the environment and their place in it.
As families discover the joys of gardening, young students engage all their senses observing plant growth, insects, birds and worms. Through hands on gardening even the youngest can grasp science, engineering and math concepts. Students need garden beds, tools and materials to grow a variety of vegetables. Kid-sized tools allow exploration of soil, water and plants. Adult-sized tools allow parents and teacher to work alongside. A shed is necessary to keep tools protected. A leaf blower lets us use an area of artificial turf as another learning space. Outdoor musical instruments would allow students to investigate sound and react to nature in artistic ways. This project provides an array of learning that is the pathway for STEAM education to begin.
