The power of reading in a child's life cannot be underestimated. It is an essential skill that will not only enhance one's academic success as a learner, but will also be constant and influential for a lifetime. As students transition from lower elementary to upper elementary, the academic rigor and demands are heightened, especially in regards to reading instruction, science standards, and awareness to social studies topics. This has the potential to cause students to become apprehensive towards reading, especially if they feel unsuccessful. As educators, it is important to provide effective reading instruction and identify each child's interests and unique needs and strengths. The magazines I am requesting will provide students with high-interest texts that are engaging and will give them the opportunity to explore a wide variety of texts in different subject areas. Access to these materials will ensure that all students' individual needs and interests are met, which will in turn foster reading development, promote self-confidence and feelings of success, and nurture a life-long love of reading.
