In my classroom, I have students who are constantly on the move, kicking their legs and fidgeting with items in their desk to help maintain their focus. I have students who ask to sit on the floor to do their work because it is more comfortable, and other students who prefer to rock in a rocking chair.
When students are given the choice of where to sit, they are more motivated, creative, and excited about learning. I want to provide a learning environment for my students where their seating preferences are differentiated, just like the way I differentiate how I teach to meet all their needs.
Flexible seating is a way to set up your classroom where there are a variety of seating options that appeal to the different needs of students. I would like to update the “traditional” classroom setting, providing my students with different seating options so they have control in where they sit to work or receive instruction. Revamping the classroom setting requires removing a lot of the traditional desks and chairs and replacing them with stability balls, floor pillows, wobbling stools, and standing desks with stools. These different materials give students access to standing, sitting, bouncing, and wiggling while working. Being able to do these things while working will help my students be themselves, get any excess energy out, feel more comfortable while working, all while increasing their attention and focus in class.
I want to empower my students to take control of their learning, and it all starts with choosing where to sit!
