Books have the ability to show us who we are, where we’ve come from, and who we can become. I’ve read many books in my life, and very few have affected me as deeply as Katherine Applegate’s Wishtree. I want to buy a book for all of my third, fourth, and fifth grade students so we can read together. I plan to encourage them to take the All Are Welcome Here pledge: a promise to accept, respect, and celebrate differences. Katherine Applegate created the pledge and related activities as a teaching resource for her novel. Through readings and discussions of this book and others, our teachers hope to inspire empathy, curiosity, and open-hearts across all grade levels.
We want to teach them to embrace those who are different, to learn without fear, and discover it is our differences that can unite us in friendship and humanity.
We will start the year with building our very own Wish Tree where students can tie their wishes and hopes throughout the school year. This will be a part of our literacy kick-off jubilee. Students and their families will be invited to share in story times, book walks, a costume contest, and more in a celebration of reading.
