During gym class, students are engaged in whole group and small group learning. We begin by practicing and developing gross motor skills: walking, galloping, skipping and running. Then, during small group stations, students are actively playing in different groups where they can focus on their throwing, catching, dribbling, balance and teamwork skills. The students need more equipment to use during this time of class.
They will strengthen their muscles and build teamwork skills while playing soccer, hockey, riding scooters and bouncing around, then use the yoga resources to help relax and calm their minds and bodies before returning to their classrooms.
Having the gym as a safe space to learn about the strength they have, regardless of what language they speak, helps the students exponentially. They can burn energy and then return back to their classrooms ready to learn, because moving bodies are learning bodies!
