I moved schools last year and the classroom library I have belonged to the school, so it could not come with me. My new classroom was filled with manuals, college textbooks, high school level literature, and books that were published in the early 1950s. Obviously, none of this interests a 5th grader who is reading below grade level.
The gift of a classroom library will serve so many students in my school. I will be able to use these books year after year in order to inspire literacy among students who cannot afford to buy their own books.
Students will be granted permission to borrow books to take home and read. They will be able to explore literature during class time as well. These English Language Learners need as much exposure to literature as they can get. As of right now, they are not getting what they need because my classroom is lacking the library to provide them with this enriching experience.
