Our school is an intercity school comprised of many different families. 58% of the student population receives free and reduced lunch. Many of students do not have a computer or access to the Internet at home. A variety of cultures are represented in our district. Therefore, approximately 50% of the 4th grade students are English language learners. The majority of these hard working students are very capable but struggle tremendously with reading comprehension, which then affects their success in all academic areas. I was an English language learner and know how important is it to use visuals and graphics in instruction. This is key to enhancing student comprehension and performance while at the same time, tapping into creative potential. I have discovered that technology is no longer a luxury, but an important necessity to reach and teach all students.
