Who doesn't enjoy burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increasing motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture? Those are some immediate results of flexible seating and it's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
I want my classroom learning environment to be conducive to open collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. This cannot happen in a classroom where students are sitting in rows of desks. I am hoping to create a flexible seating learning environment where students are given a choice and are able to sit and learn in a space that is most physically accommodating and inviting to them.
With the use of active learning stools, balance balls, wobble chairs, and bean bag chairs I am giving students various seating options throughout our classroom that allows them flexibility and movement without being an interruption to the entire class. Some students need the freedom to move when their body tells them to and our new desired classroom set up gives all students the opportunity to move and learn!
I want students to have a vested interest as well as take ownership over their learning. By creating a student centered classroom with flexible seating I am hoping to lead the charge and give students the appropriate space and mobility they need in order to be as successful in school as physically possible.
