My classroom is composed of 29 multicultural learners, but our school has a high mobility rate so in a typical year I have between 21 and 35 students. Two students are newcomers from refugee camps and speak no English, six students are English Language Learners, three are part of the special education program and half of my students have experienced or are currently experiencing trauma in their lives. I believe in my students and I know they are a gift to this world.
Our school has over 30 languages spoken and a wide variety of social and academic needs. A full 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and are able to take backpacks full of food on Fridays and during Farmer's market weeks. We have a SUN (schools uniting neighborhoods) program that allows students to receive further education and dinner instead of being home alone. The teachers at my school are dedicated to their students.
