Working in an urban vocational high school presents many challenges. But one, in particular, is getting my students to read books independently. Many of my students consider themselves as non-readers. This could be due to learning or behavioral issues or simply because they haven't found that perfect book to hook them. Many of them are not willing to go to the school library or public library: it's too unfamiliar or too overwhelming. Finding and purchasing titles that are proven to engage students will help my 10th grade students begin the path to becoming life-long readers. I've found that once I can do that, students become open to the power of reading and actually enjoy their time with their choice independent reading book.
