I love reading picture books with my kids! Not only do we share a good story, but students are also motivated to try new strategies in their own writing. From character development to figurative language to dialog to mechanics, we learn so much from the amazing books that we read aloud in class. A document camera and the diverse stories on this list will help us to make the most of our language arts time together!
With this project, we are excited to enhance our library with picture books that will be used as mentor texts for aspiring authors.
"By using mentor texts, the reader can virtually position him-or herself to sit beside the author and study how the text is constructed and how it communicates." - The Writing Thief, Ruth Culham
The 20 books I have chosen for this project have delightful illustrations and engaging storylines that include a variety of characters, writing styles, and themes. When used as mentor texts, they will support the reading and writing skills we are mastering in fifth grade. We look forward to building our collection of picture books written by professional writers!
