I am currently working as an Interventionist in a Title 1 school. I pull students one on one or in very small groups to tackle reading and math skills to help them "close the gap." Previously, I spent 13 years as a 3rd grade classroom teacher.
70% of the students in my school speak English as a second language. 98% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. These are not families who can afford to help me purchase or replace something, but they work hard to make sure their children come equipped to learn each day. I work in an amazing school with people who know poverty is not a learning disability!
My job is not easy, but I remind myself that I have been entrusted with these children for a reason. I believe my first job is to make all of my students feel loved and nurtured. The academics always fall into place once they understand that school is a warm and safe place to be.
