Film and video professionals routinely use walkie talkie radios while working on set to communicate with crew members, and I want to start teaching my students some of the ins-and-outs of using a walkie. Gaining this knowledge in high school will give them a leg up over others entering the field.
We will use these radios every time we work on a live event, and having them will greatly enhance our ability to work together in teams. Currently, we have no discreet method to ask a camera operator to focus on something specific, for instance - these tools will allow us to speak directly to all team members from across the room or even across a big athletic field.
Students will learn lingo like "What's your 20?" and "Lock up the set" and begin to understand the use of separate communication channels for different production departments.
