My students and I are making connections with people who are different from us. We are a predominantly white, rural community, and my students are connecting with people from other racial and cultural backgrounds through the texts we read.
"The Hate U Give" is a book that will open my students' eyes to the lived experiences and humanity of urban black youth. These understandings will help my students connect with people in the real world who are not like them and will help them work with others to make our world a better place.
As we read, we will work towards both making connections between the text and and our own lives through text analysis and through service-based writing projects.
