Many of the books our school possesses belong in the western canon of literature. While these books are worthwhile, our students, and all students for that matter, benefit from cultural representation in the novels they read. While it's not my job to make students think one way or another, it is my job to help them come in contact with texts that will teach them more about themselves, their culture, and how they fit into the larger picture of life. My students need to know that western characters are not the only heroes in literature. They need to know there are characters that look, breathe, think, and act the way they do. By adding this book to our repertoire, we help begin that process.
