To paint an accurate picture of the students I serve and the stigma that they live with day-in and day-out, let me first explain that the city in which I teach is considered the poorest and most crime-ridden small city in the United States. 97% of students are from bilingual, low-income families, some of whom have recently relocated to the United States from different countries and deserve the same opportunities as all other students, no matter the location.
With textbooks that are older than my students, lack of other fundamental resources, and 30+ student classes, teaching social studies and truly making it impactful to my students, many of whom did not even grow up in this country, is incredibly difficult. My goal is to not only show them how important our history is, but also to show them how important their individual perspectives are in impacting our country's future as well.
