Do you remember what book first sparked your love for reading? "The Witches" by Roald Dahl and "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry are two that I hope will jump start our 4th grade class into a year of adventure through literature. "The Little Prince" so gently and beautifully explains human relationships, and acts as a perfect segue into the Social-Emotional Learning component of our class. As I build relationships with my students, and as we participate in whole-class activities and meetings I will use components of the text to teach respect, kindness, empathy, and the give-and-take that goes into human relationships.
A part of why we read is for enjoyment, and there is no text more enticing and entertaining than Roald Dahl's "The Witches." As we approach Halloween, we will read this book together and in small groups and discuss imagery, master reading comprehension, and delve into author's craft.
I am very hopeful that beginning with whole-group, enticing texts, it will set up our class to be excited about reading in Literature Circles for the rest of the year.
