Most of my students are eligible for the free/reduced lunch program but that does not keep them from pursuing their dreams. They are thinking about their future now. They are inquisitive and serious about learning even though they face serious financial woes that prevent many from a stable place to live and others that battle health issues. When I asked them to name an issue they are passionate about or very concerned with many of them talked about the 2016 presidential election and the candidates, the dwindling water supply in California and the need for clean drinking water in Flint Michigan, and the increased pollution of the oceans that jeopardizes wildlife. We have a supportive staff and community with limited parent involvement due to economic issues.
