Do you think that would make it more challenging to learn to read?
You're right it does. The letters might look the same, and some of the sounds might be the same as well. However, it is still a different language.
This is the daily struggle for my students. They are learning to read and write in a language that is strange to them. Many of them did not attend kindergarten and lack letter recognition. Some of them, are new to the country and everything is new and strange. A few of them are even repeating a grade level because they did not master or even progress in basic skills.
