My students are in the lowest social economic situation in our city, they live and survive in poverty. Studies show that this population is at-risk for academic failure and high drop out rates. My school is 100% free and reduced lunches, which means that their families are living below poverty level. Over 88% of the students are second language learners and need support in learning English. School is the place that they can come and not only learn but also be safe, cared for, and fed two meals every day.For students living in this area, school is a safe place to come and use technology that they don't have access to in their home lives. It's hard for students to come to school everyday but they do come, they want to learn and they work hard to get better. As a second grade teacher, I have the opportunity to help kids find a love of learning. For students who are trying survive the real world, education may not be a priority. However, by discovering that they can excel using current technology then that sets the groundwork for future academic success.
