We are in an era when information is available everywhere we go. We are all in constant bombardment of data that may or may not be reliable and supported. This is why it is important to know how to use all this information effectively.
One of my goals as a science teacher is to guide my students through the process of analyzing and being critical of the information they receive everyday from different sources. This a reason why I want my students to have access to tools that will open the door to that information, in this case the tablets. For example, one of the big discussion topics in the media is about climate change. Using the tablets, I can guide my students to analyze different articles and pieces of information that they find in order to evaluate their reliability. Once we find pieces of information that meet the academic standards, we can start a discussion using the evidence gathered, digital simulations, and other electronic tools to support the students claims. Finally, the students can practice their presentation abilities by constructing a slideshow that summarizes their claims, findings, and conclusions.
Learning to use the information in this way may allow my students to make better decisions in their adult life and defend their points of view using reliable information and strong arguments.
