In order for students to improve their reading skills, they must be exposed to different types of text that allow for improvement with some scaffolding along the way. They must be able to take a text one step above their reading level, and with guided help, use different reading strategies to fully comprehend the text.
With these guided reading materials, students will have access to group sets that will allow them to receive small group instruction at one level above their own. Working together as a group, I will be able to target different skills at each student's level within the time frame given throughout the school year. Guided reading groups usually range from about 4-6 students, and with these sets of books, I will be able to at least address 4 students at a time.
These books have very diverse topics, and they have both text types: fiction and informational, which are both extremely important! I want to be able to use these books to not only increase their reading level, but to instill a love for reading as they continue their education. If they continue to love reading, they will continue to thrive for years to come!
