OIHS serves over 380 students who speak more than 32 languages and come from 33 countries as immigrants and refugees. 100% of OIHS students are English language learners, nearly all of whom immigrated to the US during the last 4 years. Many students live in some of the toughest neighborhoods in Oakland, despite having escaped war or poverty in their home countries.
No student is anonymous at OIHS, and the model supports personalization, growth and success for each student. The 11th graders are reading for purpose in their Reading/Academic Literacy classroom; some for the first time in their lives. They bring with them stories and experiences of their home countries: Guatemala, Eritrea, Yemen, Afghanistan, Honduras, Mexico, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Rwanda, to name a few. Students are placed in heterogeneous language groups to encourage their English development in addition to content subjects. Every lesson is differentiated to meet individual needs.
