Social skills are often a hard skill for students with autism spectrum disorder. Since many students lack and/or struggle with communication skills they draw back from the crowd. The social aspect of school, learning and their environments can be large and intimidating.
Using technology to enhance and practice their communication skills will assist my students in gaining the confidence they need to engage and explore their large world outside of their comfort zones.
By using different apps my students will be able to create themselves on the screen and immerse themselves into interactive social stories. This will allow them to learn and practice important communication skills such as, when to respond and detecting emotions. My students will be able to practice risk free in the classroom first using the iPads and each other. Then they will take their new built confidence and skills outside of the classroom to become a more involved piece of the school community with much less stresses and/or anxieties.
