We are in a very special school in southern California. Only a few schools like ours exist. Many of our students have needs that cannot be accommodated in a comprehensive high school, such as wheelchair support, special feeding accommodations and access to particular technologies and therapies. However, we also have students who graduated from a comprehensive high school who continue to need support in developing skills for their transition into adulthood. Not only do we have a rigorous academic curriculum that the district provides, but we also have practical courses, such as grounds-keeping, culinary arts and gardening to name a few. Unfortunately, as with many schools and districts, support for these kinds of classes is minimal and we have to find outside resources to help sustain our programs. Horticulture is one of our newest subjects in need of development and support.
