I teach the Upper Autism Core class with 6 students. My class is made up of three 3rd graders, two 4th graders, and one 5th grade student. My students thrive with accommodations such as visuals, structured schedules, manupulatives, small group instruction, and timed breaks.
My students are learning to verbalize their needs and wants, in addition to ask for a break and make great use of the quiet area in the classroom. They have a choice to use sensory tools, read books, or simply take a breather.
To transition from outdoor play to academic instruction, my students earn "Quiet Cool Down Time." During this time, they have a choice of a preferred activity in the classroom to cool down before instruction.
All in all, I have a great group of students who need support from different tools to help them stay on task and get through the day with ease.
