Due to budget cuts, our library is severely understaffed. We only have a librarian one day a week. While I teach mathematics, I also understand how important reading is. I volunteer time, before school, to open the library to the students. They can come in and read, check out books, work on homework or get homework help. We are in DESPERATE need for new books! There are no books in the library, fiction or nonfiction, that have the LGBTQ+ theme. Our students need the opportunity to understand, empathize with and accept their own, and other's, sexuality. We have books about religion, ethnicity, hobbies, etc., but there is not a single book with a character that is part of the LGBTQ+ community. Every year I spend thousands of dollars on materials for my classroom and items for my students (clothes, beds, food etc.) I am hoping, that with the help of Donors Choose, we can provide the school library with LGBTQ+ books.
