My students spend most of their day within my classroom in hard chairs and uneven desks. A futon, wobble chairs, and floor chairs with lap desks will provide students with options. Many of my students have difficulty paying attention for extended periods of time. Giving the opportunity for students to move and change seating can eliminate distractions and other behaviors that may arise. For example; a child who cannot sit for an extended period of time in a hard chair, may need a sensory output and would have the option to sit on the futon to complete his/her work.
The environment shapes the experience of a child's learning.
In my classroom, sitting still is next to impossible. My students need the opportunity to move throughout the day. These items will encourage movement, collaboration, and a place where they can work independently. I encourage students to make choices that are best for them, as long as they are safe and respectful to others.
This project will help set students up for success by allowing them to work in their most successful environment.
