I am in my second year of teaching 6th and 7th grade students with IEPs who come into our school at approximately a kinder to third grade reading level. Our students are also on the margins to socio-economic status. At the core of my being, I believe that growth in reading begins with a love for reading. However, students who struggle to read often will not find any joy in reading and thus will not read by their own volition. Currently, my co-teachers have mostly 5th grade to 8th grade or higher reading books in their classroom libraries due to funding and the nature of teaching a general education classroom.
Please help me increase access to the joy of reading for my special education students by providing them with a choice of starter books that they can read independently every week. This will foster confidence in reading and growth the more and more that they read.
