For this project, my fifth grade students will be drawing from observation to create self portraits. Students will be learning about facial proportions, as well as how to add value and depth to their drawings by shading and adding highlights. In order for students to complete this project, it is imperative that they have self portrait mirrors so they can draw themselves. Students will also need a set of charcoal pencils in order to shade and highlight. Charcoal pencils will be a new material for these students, and experimenting with new materials is always important for artists of any age.
