My students are inspiring creative young people with critical and interested minds. About 90% are students of color and about 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite significant adversity in many of their lives, they come to school wanting to learn and having hope for their lives in the future.
However, for many of my students, reading is not an activity done by choice; in fact it is more of a chore. As a 9th grade language arts teacher, I am often charged with trying to undo years of negativity built up in response to reading difficulties or ambivalence. My students want to continue to grow and develop beyond societal constraints and personal obstacles, they just need some resources and support from others, like we all do.
