My campus has approximately 700 students. We are a low socioeconomic, Title 1 campus. The majority of the clientele is a large percentage of Mexican and African American. Literacy is a huge concern. We are constantly encouraging education and pushing a need for reading. Some of them lack good role models for living and academics. They struggle. Our parent support is lacking. Our PTO is just now getting off the ground and our school is one of the oldest in the district. Some want to be a part of the library community, but feel it's not cool and wonder what their peers might think.
Our state assessment scores have wavered back and forth between acceptable and not acceptable. We must be ever vigilant not to lose these kids or give up on them. They have experienced those who have given up on them. We need to keep hope alive and offer a better way.
Our staff works hard to create engaging lessons, control behavior, meet their needs and make personal connections.
