A classroom library will inspire my students to celebrate academics and the interconnectivity between math and reading. For most of my students, this is the first time they have a separate teacher for each subject. I have found that many students become academically or socially lost in the transition from elementary to middle school. My goal is to provide them with a classroom that feels like home, with an emphasis on a holistic education. Adding a classroom library is a large part of attaining this goal.
Many of my students are far below grade level in mathematics, and struggle to decipher and contextualize word problems; so their reading level has a direct effect on their ability to practice critical thinking. While I can encourage them to read at home, having a classroom library really puts that encouragement into action. Many of my students do not have access to recent or popular book titles, and I would be so excited to provide that for them. A classroom library would give my students an excitement for learning by providing books that are interesting. Any project that challenges my students to become invested in or excited about their own learning is a success.
