We teach students from two different communities and have been fortunate enough to find lessons that improve their reading skills as well as writing skills. These students will use the copies of Bud, Not Buddy to learn about how rules are communicated as well as what life was like in the 1930s. Students will read and learn to use figurative language as well as find out why an author would choose certain words. El Deafo is a 2015 Newbery Honor Book. It is a memoir of a girl who is different from her classmates. She uses that difference as her superpower! The students will learn about reading and writing graphic novels as well as what to look for in a memoir.
