When my students are entering my Drama classroom I want the environment to transport them into a world that is colorful, fun, non-judgmental. Many of these students have been exposed to trauma, violence and stressors related to poverty. Because of this, it is extremely important to foster an environment where they can begin to feel part of a classroom community. Once they begin to trust that they have a voice in my class it is fulfilling to see how they are able to open up and begin to explore the elements of Drama and Theater through activities that teach skills such as team-building, exploration, self-understanding, and identifying and controlling emotional responses in a positive way. Having a classroom environment every day provides a happy, clean and safe place to be both visually and emotionally is something that will help the students know and remember their own self-worth.
