A requirement in my class is to read a novel every quarter. The problem, however, is that many students are not excited about reading. I tell them that the issue is that they just haven't found their "type" of book. I would like to establish a reading culture in my classroom and be able to have books that my students can borrow.
My students come in to Freshman English without many reading fundamentals because reading has never been important to them. Purchasing books is not a possibility for many and my hope is to bridge this gap. This is why my dream is to provide them with popular young adult novels that may spark an interest in reading.
I truly believe that books open the door to many educational experiences that are missed by too many students. These books are fiction, but they will help them to learn to be more active readers and this will, in essence, transfer to reading in all contents with more tools to succeed and confidence that only comes with practice.
