My students come from families of low income. Often times, they do not play enough while at home. This can cause a lot of students to feel the need to get up and get those wiggles out during academic time. The amount of wandering around the room can cause distractions within the learning environment.
My goal is to give students choice and an appropriate way to move during academic time, decreasing the distractions within our classroom. I believe that flexible seating can provide my students with the tools they need to be successful. With flexible seating, my students will have the chance to be in control of their own learning, as well as their bodies. Yoga balls, wobble stools and sit upons provide the students with an appropriate amount of leg and bottom movement as the work. Chair bands can assist students who feel the need to move their legs. Scoop chairs allow students to work within the room so that they are separated from distractions. Regular stools are great for students to practice sitting up tall. Each week, my students will get to choose the seating option that works best for them.
As kids, it is natural to have a busy body. I want to provide a successful learning environment for my 2nd graders that allows them to move and be comfortable!
