Twenty-five second grade students strive for a chance to succeed in my class everyday and escape from the reality of the low-income, high poverty environment that under-estimates their ability to become something great. My students and I are a family in which we all work together to create a successful, exciting, welcoming, student centered learning environment. My class is comprised of underprivileged, inner city children. Our class and school is the only source of stability, consistency, structure, love and care that these children experience in their daily lives. Our school is located in NYC, and unfortunately due to the community in which our school is located, we as teachers are not equipped or funded with the technology or resources to provide students with experiences and opportunities to explore people, places, events, history, and things they would normally never even dream of experiencing.
