I teach at a public school located on the southwest side of Chicago. The majority of my students come from low income households. Despite the many challenges my students face, they come to school ready and willing to learn, a quality I have yet to take for granted. Together with my 7th and 8th graders, we have created a classroom community, a place of inquiry where they feel free to express their voice, and are encouraged to grow intellectually and emotionally. Teaching two grade levels has its benefits; I have learned a lot about them as students, learners, and as human beings. My students are co-constructors of knowledge, risk takers, storytellers, readers, and writers who are curious and willing to try new things. Finally, they are endearing and creative, talkative, intelligent, and kind. It is with great privilege that I call them mine.
