Every year, my students come in optimistic and hopeful about the new school year. They come in expecting to be challenged. Many of them struggle with the rigor that they face in every class throughout the year. Though they are accustomed to the challenges of life - more so that any young person should be - they sometimes lack the kind of academic grit that they need to juggle their responsibilities in the classroom with the responsibilities they have outside of it.
Our school is trying to change that. Students deserve a high-quality education that will prepare them for the demands of college and the duties of a responsible citizen. They deserve to be able to have choices that will enrich their lives. My students are hopeful because they know struggle, and they're willing to work in order to gain the tools necessary to transform that hope into reality.
