In our special education classroom, sitting still and maintaining focus on our work is a difficult task. Our schedule is very rigorous as students have math, reading, writing, science, and social studies all morning without any real break. They start working at 9:20 a.m. and aside from the occasional movement break, they do not have lunch or special until 1:20 p.m. My students need the opportunity to move consistently throughout the day to help with attention issues. Flexible seating can provide an opportunity for students to choose the learning space that best suits their needs. In my classroom, students are free to make the choice to work in a space that is best for them. We are looking for balance cushions, wobbly chairs, medicine ball chairs, and a nugget couch.
Donations to this project will provide students the opportunity to stand, kneel or wobble during a lesson, and will allow them to focus on the content rather than focus on the need to move around the room. This project will help set students up for success by allowing them to learn in positions that best fit their learning style.
