Our middle school students are fifth through eighth graders who enjoy living in a rural mountain setting and the high number of English language learners, mainly from Mexico and El Salvador, have sometimes never seen snow before. Over 50% of our population receives free and reduced lunch and these students pour into the library especially seeking fun adventures and fantastic places to escape via books, to participate in lunchtime STEAM related activities, or to get help with homework. My colleagues and I work hard with students to promote a growth mindset and to teach them to take ownership for their own learning. Students are empowered by this culture we've created and we want to maintain a student-centered learning environment that values their needs but continues to promote attentiveness while maintaining a strong work ethic.
