I teach at an elementary school in a high poverty area. Our school is considered Title 1 with 90% of these students receiving free or reduced lunch along with a breakfast in the classroom program.
My students are predominately English language learners whose parents are struggling to make ends meet. Many of my students come from homes with little or no books. They come from families that don't always have time to read or the language skills to read to them in English. This listening center will give them the gift of storytelling. They will hear classic stories while they learn fluency. They will build their vocabulary and learn more about story structure.
While our school receives money for basic supplies, our district is facing financial troubles and we are unable to ask for extra supplies and materials needed to help our struggling students.
With the help from this grant I would be one step closer to helping my students succeed in reading.
