Reading classical works can seem like a daunting task for struggling readers. However, this task seems less intimidating when students realize that the themes and plots in "old" works are still relevant today. By pairing a classical work with a current young adult novel, students are able to bridge the gap between historical and modern. This better helps students understand difficult concepts and ideas presented in classical works.
Young adult literature can motivate and engage every reader, from the reluctant to the struggling to the eager. The young adult novels chosen for this project, When I Was the Greatest and How It Went Down, are not only relevant to my students' lives, but they also continue the classroom goal of teaching rigorous and complex texts. You will be providing young adult novels that students can and want to read will also foster a love for reading outside of the classroom.
