The mission statement of my school is to provide students a foundation for developing effective habits of 21st century leaders. To be a 21st century leader, one needs emotional intelligence as well as 21st century skills. At my school, we pride ourselves in teaching these qualities. An emotionally intelligent individual is proactive, puts first things first, seeks first to understand and then be understood, thinks win-win, works well and synergizes with others, and sharpens their own body and mind. They also work hard to hone in on their 21st century skills. These skills include collaboration, creative and critical thinking, and technological and informational literacy. As for technological literacy, my students work hard every day using online math and reading resources (although technology at our school site is severely lacking). At my school, 90% of my students are children of color, 90% of my students are bilingual and 99% of the student population qualify for free or reduced lunch.
