Have you ever heard a new word that you wish you had a reason to use in writing? A word that sounds fantastic, reads beautifully, or takes writing to a new level? That is the place I often find my students. They love words! They love learning a new word and being able to show their understanding of that word through writing. My students are budding writers, who are making the transition from writing related sentences to one- and two-paragraph essays. It is not uncommon for beginning-of-the-year sentences to read, "The flag is red, white, and blue," whereas end-of-the-year sentences read, "The flag is a national symbol that represents many American ideals." We stress the importance of concise and effective writing at our school. But being such a small establishment, we do not have the extra funds for resources beyond what is absolutely necessary for our day-to-day learning.
