I teach 9th grade English in a high poverty urban high school in New York City. I have a very challenging job, but I have the greatest job in the world. Every day I have the privileged to go to a place that I love and work with struggling adolescents, who surrounded by unbelievable horrors, still hold onto a dream of better days. My colleagues and I do everything we can to help them keep their hope of a better tomorrow alive.
Like so many other places in America, our latest budget cuts are devastating. In order to keep high quality teachers in our school, our teachers are not given basic supplies such as paper or pencils. Even with devastating budget cuts, my colleagues and I continue to provide quality education to our students. But without paper, books, or pens, it seems impossible that any of our student’s dreams will ever become their reality.
